Background

Qantas is Australia's largest airline, with approximately 30,000 staff worldwide. They operate in a competitive industry, where success rests largely upon efficiency and streamlined processes.

Challenge

In order to improve operations efficiency and on-time departures, Qantas needed a technology solution that would streamline their employee attendance tracking. Ensuring that baggage handlers and other critical staff are in their proper work zones at a given time would help Qantas increase on-time departure rates and avoid costly delays. The technology chosen would need to be networked across several locations across Australia, integrated with existing Qantas systems, and allow works controllers to see the real-time status of their employee workforce.

Solution

PeopleKey provided Qantas with a biometric time & attendance solution that met and exceeded their needs. PeopleKey V70i fingerprint readers were installed in locations at several airports, allowing staff to clock in and out using only a PIN number and fingerprint. PeopleKey also constructed interfaces allowing its software to integrate seamlessly with existing Qantas systems. All in/out transactions conducted on the fingerprint readers are archived on the respective device, and sent over a network to Fingerlan where the data can be used for payroll calculation. Meanwhile, a Fingerlan plug-in called Revelation gathers all of the real-time employee in/out transactions from the fingerprint readers and compares it against customized employee rosters. The resulting data is displayed on several networked workstations, allowing controllers to see a color coded, real time snapshot of their critical workforces at various locations. At a glance, controllers can see which employees are on time, late or absent, and redistribute workers if necessary, to provide coverage where needed.

Result

Qantas relies on a network of over 70 PeopleKey fingerprint readers, operating on a 24/7 basis, to manage over 3,000 critical airline staff. The PeopleKey solution saves Qantas tens of thousands of dollars per quarter in operating costs and helps ensure on-time departures.
