10/11/2009 Installing the V70i as a V20 Replacement

The V70i fingerprint reader from PeopleKey is not only one of the most capable biometric readers on the market, it is also the only modern biometric reader that is backward compatible with the Fingerscan V20 product once sold by Identix.

A number of Fingerscan V20 owners around the world are in the process of upgrading to the V70i fingerprint reader, so we wanted to offer some tips that will ease the transition and help ensure a successful deployment.

First, some background info:

- The V70i can be installed as a direct replacement for a Fingerscan V20
- By default, the V70i will auto convert the V20 fingerprint templates that it receives from Fingerlan to the modern ANSI 378 format
- Any remaining V20s on the network will continue to use the old template
- The V70i readers will use the new template
- Match speed / accuracy / reliability is far better in the V70i than the V20
- This allows customers to upgrade gradually, with no need to re-enroll users
- Customers may also upgrade all readers at once with no need to re-enroll

And now some tips to prevent installation issues:

- In mixed environments, all readers must use the latest firmware versions
- On the V20 this is firmware version 2.13
- On the V70i this is version 4.0N
- In mixed environments, Fingerlan 4.8.8 or later MUST be used
- PeopleKey offers Fingerlan major point updates (v3.x to v4.x) for 50% off
- We offer minor point Fingerlan updates free of charge
- Lastly, in a mixed environment any NEW enrollments should be done on a V20 so that older style fingerprint template is pushed out to all of the readers (the V20s will use this older style template and the V70i's will convert the older template to the new format for their own use)

We hope this information will assist those of you who are in the process of upgrading your (or your customers') V20 networks. If you have additional questions please see this link or contact our tech support team for assistance. We'll be happy to help.
